Dr. Abdul Rahim Mustafawi is a prominent native persona in the medical community of UAE, and currently works with Al Jalila Children’s Hospital as a Consultant Pediatric Surgeon.
After graduating from the King Edward Medical College, Pakistan in 1980, he held training posts in Germany, and United Kingdom. Following his Internship at Rashid Hospital, he completed an intensive training and obtained the German Board (Fachartz) in both the General and Paediatric Surgery in 1988. He is a Fellow of American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of England
Dr. Mustafawi played a pivotal role as a consultant and head of Surgery department at Latifa Hospital before joining Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital. As Medical director for more than seven years, Dr. Mustafawi played an eminent role in maintaining quality of care at Latifa Hospital. During this period, it was one of the first Hospitals in the region to achieve JCIA accreditation. He also held many positions in Dubai Health Authority such as the Vice President of the Medical Council since 2015, and Chairman of the Central Emergency and Disaster Committee. Presently he is a member of the Dubai Center for Special Needs - Board of Governors since 2019.
He served as the Treasurer, Vice President& President of the Emirates Medical Association and President of the Emirates Paediatric Surgery Society – EMA since 1998. His international affiliations are no less of noteworthy. He is a member of the Arab Association of Paediatric Surgeons since 1993, and served in the capacity of the President in 2010-2012. He was the President of the Asian Association of Paediatric Surgeons 2002-2004 & a Member since 1993. He is also an overseas member of European Paediatric Surgeons Association since 2004. Besides, he is a member in the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons since 1982, the American Association of Paediatric Urology since 2006, the International Society on Hypospadias and Intersex Disorder 1999, the Scientific Committee of Harvard Medical International and the Thalassemia International Federation Committee.
He participated in many scientific activities; as an examiner for the Arab Board as well as the European Board in Pediatric Surgery. In addition to his contribution as a speaker in scientific conferences. In January 2019, he was invited as a Guest Speaker to Lahore – Pakistan at the Hirschsprung’s Workshop .He is also a member of Editorial Board of the Emirates Medical Journal, Arab World Journal, and an Editorial Consultant for the European Journal of Paediatric Surgery.
He received the Sheikh Rashid Award for Medical Sciences in 1989. He was also awarded the UAE Armed Forces Award for Medical Services as Medical Director in 2012, and the Distinguished Employee and the Pioneer Physician in Dubai Health Authority, back to back in 2013 and 2014. One of his more recent accolades was in 2015 in recognition of Services for Central Disaster Committee.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Dr. Abdul Rahim Mustafawi is awarded Hamdan Award for Honoring Individuals Working in the field of Medicine & Health, for the 2019-2020 term.
