H.E. Abdulla Bin Souqat, Executive Director of the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, gave a keynote speech in which he stressed that the interest in advancing scientific research and continuing medical education in the medical sector comes at the top of the priorities of the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences. This interest translates into a set of activities and events carried out by the award through its five centers, including the Awards Center, the Center for Scientific Research Support, the Arab Center for Genetic Studies, the Center for Publications and Publishing, and the Center for Continuing Medical Education.
He explained that the award's Continuing Medical Education Center is considered one of the most important centers that contributed in its efforts to establish the ingredients necessary to improve health services provided through continuing medical education programs in health institutions.
Houssam Chahine, UNHCR's UNHCR’s Chief of Private Sector Partnerships in the MENA region, stated that there are more than 100 million people around the world who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, human rights violations and the effects of climate change. This shocking figure should serve as a wake-up call and a reminder of the need to resolve destructive conflicts and confront the causes that force innocent people to leave their homes in search of security and peace.
He pointed out that two-thirds of the forcibly displaced people come from only five countries: Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar. They live with daily challenges and harsh living conditions and struggle to provide their families with basic requirements such as shelter, education, health care and livelihood opportunities.
The right to health care is a right that everyone should have, and one of the basic requirements to enable refugees to rebuild their lives. UNHCR supports public health programs to provide primary health, nutritional and psychological services, improve the quality of local health services and ensure the integration of refugees into national health systems. Note that the vast majority of refugees (about 83%) are hosted by low/middle-income countries.
He added that there is an urgent need to find innovative and sustainable solutions to support these refugees with great generosity.
