Hamdan Medical Award supports patients with thalassemia 24 October 2013
Abdullah Bin Souqat, Executive Director of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences said that the Award paid the registration fees for 50 patients with thalassemia in the 15th thalassemia International Federation World Congress held from 20 till 23 October under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the U.A.E. Armed Forces and organized by Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Humanitarian and Scientific Foundation.
 
With the participation of 2000 doctors from 40 countries all over the world, the conference was held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. The conference included a program for patients with thalassemia and their relatives on many important issues such as the definition of thalassimia, thalassimia history, the treatment through blood transfusion, the relationship between heart disease and thalassemia, the excess of iron, viral hepatitis, the importance of dental care for patients with thalassemia, the relationship between thalassemia and the growth and fertility of the males and females, diabetes and thalassemia in addition to community and governmental support to the non-profit organizations.
 
Additionally, HMA participated in the accompanying exhibition which was opened by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman of Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Humanitarian and Scientific Foundation, and of the Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa International thalassemia Award.
 
During his tour in the exhibition, Sheikh Zayed was briefed on the efforts exerted by Hamdan Medical Award in supporting the health sectors locally and internationally through its Award Center, Center for Arab Genomic Studies, Continuing Medical Education Center and Hamdan Medical Journal.
