Hamdan Medical Award discusses ways of cooperation with the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences 23 November 2012
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences (HMA) held a meeting with the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) in Kuwait, with the aim of studying the ways of cooperation in applying the medical ethics in the medical practices according to the principles of Sharia.

This was stated by Prof. Dr. Najib Al Khaja, Secretary General, HMA, after his visit to the IOMS heading a delegation included Dr. Ahmed Al-Hashemi, a member of HMA Board of Trustees and Dr. Mona Alrukhaimi, professor at the Dubai Medical College. The delegation held discussions with H.E Abdul Rahman Al Awadi, the IOMS head and Dr. Ali Saif, Secretary-General, and Dr Ahmed Al-Gendi, Assistant Secretary-General of the IOMS.

“The cooperation between HMA and the IOMS is very important as it follows up the challenges facing the contemporary Islamic World, whose medical practices seek to go in line with the principles of Islam”, said Al Khaja.

“Among the main priorities of HMA is seeking to apply the legislative controls in organizing the medical practices. The Award has many achievements in that regard including "Dubai Declaration", issued in November 2007 during the 2nd Pan Arab Human Genetics Conference which was organized by the Award’s Centre for Arab Genomic Studies with the participation of Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department on the Ethical Perspectives of Genetic Application in the Arab World”, he added.

“During the meeting, we were briefed on the establishment of the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences in 1984 in Kuwait. We reviewed the IOMS objectives including the revival of the doctrines of the Islamic religion to the treatment of and protection against various physical and psychological ailments and the revival of the Islamic heritage in the domain through a reading of researches and studies carried out by the pioneer Muslim physicians in the light of the modern technological advances”, he said.

“The organization encourages research workers in the field of Islamic Medical sciences and concert medical and juristic viewpoints with a view to reach a common ground on controversial medical and legal issues in the application of recent medical and legal issues in the application of recent medical findings and providing alternative drugs and methods of treatment to those prohibited in Islam”, Al Khaja said.

It is worth mentioning that the IOMS co-operates with national and international organizations adopting the same purposes, establishes health centers for the needy Muslims in the world, unifies publish and propagate scientific terms and Islamic moral concepts for the medical professions and co-ordinates efforts exerted in the field of health services in the Islamic World.
