He has been a Staff Physician in the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi since 2014. Before joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Al Mahmeed served as Head of Cardiology from 2007-20014 and the Deputy Chief Medical Officer from 2007-2012 at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), Abu Dhabi, a Clinical Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – UAEU from 2007-2016.

Dr. Al Mahmeed received his medical degree from the University of Southampton, England, in 1988. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and his fellowship in Cardiology and Echocardiography at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is also a fellow of The American College of Chest Physicians, The American College of Physicians, The American College of Cardiology, The European Society of Cardiology, and The Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology. He is also a Board Member of the Gulf Heart Association and president from 2014-2016. He has been practicing for more than 25 years. Echocardiography is his specialty, and prevention is his focus area as he is eager to contribute to better heart awareness and disease outcomes.

In 2018, Dr. Wael and MBRU collaborated on the “MBRU-Al-Mahmeed Research Award,” focusing on supporting scientific research. The award was open to scientists in the UAE and GCC. Priority is given to proposals in cancer biology and cardio-metabolic diseases, including diabetes mellitus and obesity.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, presented Dr. Wael Al Mahmeed with the first ‘Mohammed bin Rashid Award for Investing in Scientific Research in recognition of his efforts in support of research and the scientific community in the UAE.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions towards developing healthcare services and supporting Scientific Research, Dr. Wael Al Mahmeed is awarded the Hamdan Award for Honoring Individuals Working in the Field of Medicine & Health for the 2021-2022 term.
