Professor Khalid Matar Al-Otaibi is a urologic surgeon, endoscopy consultant, and full Professor at Imam Abdul Rahman bin Faisal University, Dammam. He has held many positions such as the Medical Director and Deputy Dean of Hospital Affairs as well as General Director of King Fahd University Hospital. In addition to his scientific and administrative duties, he participated in residents’ training for the Saudi Board Program

He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from King Faisal University in Dammam in 1987, followed by the Canadian Board of Urology and Endoscopy in 1995, and a fellowship in Endourology and Laparoscopy, University of Manitoba, Canada in 1996.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada and a member of the Canadian Urological Association

He subspecialized in Endourology, laparoscopic kidney surgeries, and laparoscopic surgery for urinary system tumors. After his return from Canada in 1996, he was the first surgeon in the Middle East to perform laparoscopic surgery to remove kidney tumors

He has performed rare surgeries that have been recorded in many international scientific journals and books, including the interventional kidney stone removal surgery. He also developed a new method for dilating the congenital narrowing of kidney pelvis and ureter by using the endoscope and laser, and used the laparoscopy to implant a peritoneal dialysis catheter under local anesthetic. He has published more than 40 scientific papers in international journals

Due to his strong sense of belief in serving the community, he undertook many volunteering works in different regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For more than 18 years, he visited hospitals in Hail, Riyadh, and the Asir regions, as well as patients in their places because of his firm belief that a doctor should not only volunteer his time and money but his knowledge as well. He also travelled to many foreign countries such as Sierra Leone, Pakistan,Yemen, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zanzibar and the Comoros Islands, where he encountered different cases that enabled him to gain valuable experiences in his field.

In 2019, he was awarded the” International Excellence Award for Relief and Community Services” from  Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, as well as the Global Knowledge Exchange (GKEF) Award from the USA for his voluntary work in several African countries, where he performed kidney and urinary tract operations of all kinds, including deformities, congenital tumors, and kidney stones.

Due to his vast contributions and impressive success, Prof. Khalid Al Otaibi has been nominated to be the recipient of the Hamdan Award for honoring distinguished personalities from the Arab World for the term 2019-2020
