Personal Details/ Academic Background:

Dr. Shawqi Khoory is a high achieving healthcare professional with more than 20 years’ experience in the medical and administrative fields. He received his MBBCh from Ain Shams University in Cairo in 1979. Later on, he became a Facharzt (specialist) in Internal Medicine and in Gastroenterology in 1987 and 1988, respectively, at Neuperlach Hospital in Germany. Recently, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) – Edinburgh, UK (2013).

In 2014, he became a Board Member in Dubai Health Care City, and in the following year, Dr. Khoory became the Chairman of Medical Council and Board Member in Dubai Health Authority in addition to being a Member of the Advisory Council in the Ministry of Health in the UAE.

Additionally, Dr. Khoury chairs multiple committees including the Central Disaster Committee and the Central Drug Committee in Dubai Health Authority, as well as the JCI Steering Committee and Hospital Executive Committee at Rashid Hospital.
 

Achievements and responsibilities:

Dr. Khoury is the first UAE specialist in internal medicine, with a sub-specialization in endoscopy. He established the first independent center for endoscopy across the region, subsequently, he established the first electronic record system for patient registration. This initiative was the foundation of the registry system adopted by Dubai Health Authority using the modern DHA-EMR system.

Dr. Khoury joined Rashid Hospital in 1986, and he was appointed as the Head of Digestive Diseases Unit in 1992 and a consultant in gastroenterology in 1993. By 2001 and thanks to his eminent work, Dr Khoury became the Head of the Medical Department, and later Assistant Director of Medical Affairs in Rashid Hospital. After that, he became Director of Rashid Hospital from 2001- 2009, and he was the acting CEO in the same hospital until 2014. As CEO, his responsibilities included developing the strategic plan, devising and implementing new clinical services and promoting an environment that encourages recruitment and retention of qualified hospital employees.

Dr. Khoory oversaw the establishment and expansion of a dedicated Digestive Diseases Unit in 1993. Furthermore, he spearheaded the activities at the hospital, leading to acquisition of JCI Accreditation for the hospital from 2007 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2013, as well as obtaining the JCI Clinical Care Program Certification (Acute Myocardial Infarction) in 2010.

Lastly, Dr. Khoory implemented successfully the process of major expansion of clinical services through opening new units such as; Dermatology Center in 2010; Psychology Unit in 2011; Infusion Therapy Center in 2010; new Emergency and Trauma Center in 2009; Sleep Apnea Services in 2011; HIV/TB Clinic in 2011; Mental Health Day Center in 2011; Day Case Surgery Unit in 2010; Respiratory Ward (TB) in 2010; Interventional Cardiology Unit in 2011; Forth ICU - Neurosurgical in 2011; Rehabilitation Ward in 2011; Geriatric Ward in 2010; Burns Unit and Operation Theatre; and an Emergency Department Virtual Ward.
 

In recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the medical field, Dr. Shawqi Khoory is awarded the Hamdan Award for honoring individuals working in the field of Medicine and Health for the Term 2015-2016.
