2015-2016

Personal Details/ Academic Background:

Born in 1927, Dr. Mahboubi came from a family that is distinguished for its dedication to the medical field. He decided to become a dentist to help better the lives of people in the region. To achieve this, he studied dentistry at Tehran University, and after graduation, he started his extraordinary career in the healthcare sector in 1950 and continued to practice dentistry for 50 years. Throughout these years, over 50 thousand patients received dental treatment from Dr. Mahboubi and that certainly contributed to improving the quality of life for the local population.

Professional Milestones:

Dr. Mahboubi was the first dentist to provide dental care, not only in UAE but also at the regional level, and as such, his services were absolutely instrumental for local communities all over the GCC. His first dental clinic was located in the historical heart of Dubai, and that was the place where people received, for the first time, modern dental treatments using proper equipment that was procured from Germany. These indispensable services were also provided to Omanis as Dr. Mahboubi started a dental clinic in Muscat during the first decade of his long career. Few years later, the latter clinic was handed over to a local dentist. Moreover, Dr. Mahboubi trained many oral hygienists and dispatched them to other Emirates to raise awareness to various issues related to oral health. For instance, Dr. Mahboubi started applying local anesthetics on his patients in 1950, administer antibiotics, use Amalgam fillings and provide root canal treatments, all of which was unprecedented in the region. Moreover, Dr. Mahboubi established a dental lab next to his clinic, where he used to produce prosthetic crowns and tooth bridges for his patients.  In fact, Dr. Mahboubi excelled at prosthetic and restoration dentistry and he used to exchange visits with German dentists in order to get the latest updates in the field.

Importantly, he used to go on “treatment campaigns” in remote desert areas in the UAE and Oman. Interestingly, the car that he used on such trips had a rather unique number plate with the Arabic for dentist “Tabib Al-Asnan”, as car number plates where nonexistent then.

The services provided by Dr. Mahboubi’s for people in this region were highly sought after and much appreciated and, now Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences takes the opportunity to acknowledge such important services and thus it awards Dr. Mahboubi with the Hamdan Award for Honoring Individuals working in the Field of Medicine & Health for the term 2015 - 2016.
