Personal Details/Academic Background:
 
Born in 1952 in Dubai, Prof. Yousef Abdulrazzaq Bastaki completed his medical degree (MD) in 1979 and obtained his Ph.D. in 1985 from London University with his thesis on energy metabolism and growth in preterm neonates.
 
He received his diploma in Perinatal Paediatrics (DPP) in 1996 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH) in 1997. He also obtained Fellowship of The American Academy of Pediatrics in 2004 and Diploma in Mangement in Health Sciences in 2005 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2006.
 
In 1985, Prof. Abdulrazzaq joined as a Consultant Pediatrician and Neonatologist at Tawam and Al Ain Hospitals in Al Ain, UAE, and as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pediatrics at the UAE University in Al Ain. Prof. Abdulrazzaq and his wife live in Dubai and have four children.
 
Professional Milestones:
 
Prof. Abdulrazzaq was a member of the Foundation Committee for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), UAE University and till recently, was the Vice Dean of the Faculty. As an academician, he played a very active role in the development and delivery of various courses in the Faculty.
 
He was a Member of the Editorial Board of the Emirates Medical Journal for 3-years prior to being elected its Editor, a position he held from 1989 to 2002.
 
He is also a Member of the Editorial Boards of various other journals, including the International Journal of Diabetes and Metabolism, Neonatology, the Journal of the Arab Neonatology Forum, Arab Medical Journal, and Middle East Paediatrics. He was the Chairman of the CME and Accreditation Committee of the Ministry of Health, and is a Member of the Higher Council for Immunization. Other posts held by Prof. Yousef include that of the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Sheikh HaNmdan Award for Medical Sciences, Chairman of National Certification Committee of the Polio Eradication program, Advisory Member of the Dubai Biotechnology Park and chairman of the Higher Committee for Medical Liability. In the immediate aftermath of the Gulf War, Prof, Yousef volunteered to and was selected by the Government to serve as a Pediatrician in Kuwait.
 
Major Achievements:
 
Prof. Abdulrazzaq spent his first two years as Consultant Pediatrician practicing general pediatrics. He spent the latter years doing Neonatology and helped develop the total parenteral nutrition solutions that had been in use in the neonatal intensive care unit. Within his capacity as a Foundation Committee member of the FMHS, Prof. Yousef had planned and developed the premedical curriculum for the University, drew up criteria for acceptance of students to the Faculty, overseen staff recruitments, and devised space and equipment requirements.
 
Prof. Yousef developed a course on ethics that ran throughout the 5-year medical course, and also taught in the pre-medicine program as part of the Study of Medicine course. He has also helped in the organization, teaching and evaluation of candidates in the popular neonatal resuscitation course, held regularly thrice a year. He is a tutor for PALS course certified by the American Heart Association. Prof. Abdulrazzaq has organized advanced courses on neonatal asphyxia and resuscitation, emergency pediatrics, neonatal advanced life support, and pediatric advanced life support.
 
He has also established and now organizes and runs a monthly CME program for physicians and nurse in the country. Prof. Yousef was in charge of the Metabolic Laboratory, which not only serves as a research laboratory, but also serves the two hospitals in Al Ain. His research interests focus on amino acids, teratology, and asthma. He also ran an Asthma and Allergy clinic in the 2 hospitals in Al Ain. In his career, Prof. Abdulrazzaq has been honored with several Awards.
 
He was awarded the Abu Dhabi Health Authority Life-time Achievement Award in 2009. Other honors and recognitions include a Faculty of Medicine UAE University Special Appreciation Award, UAE Appreciation Award in the field of Medicine (2007), Emirates Medical Association Appreciation Award (1996,2002), Arab Board of Medical Specialties Recognition and Appreciation Award (2002), Arab Medical Union Award for Best Research Scientist (2000), and Students’ Award for Best Teacher in Pediatrics (1996).
 
Professor Yousef has been and still is active in scientific research and has published 78 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
