Personal Details and Academic Background:

Dr. Elham Mohamed Al Amiri is a prominent consultant pediatrician and a renowned academic in the UAE. Dr. Al Amiri received her medical degree from King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia in 1993, and then she obtained her Master’s degree in Pediatrics from Trinity College at the University of Dublin (Ireland). She is currently an adjunct assistant professor at the college of medicine, University of  Sharjah, and a consultant pediatrician at Al Qassimi Hospital  in Sharjah, where she is also the head of the Diabetes and Endocrine Unit.

Throughout her career, Dr. Al Amiri had worked with numerous distinguished hospitals such as Al Ain Hospital, Latifa Hospital and Rashid Hospital before joining Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah. Additionally, she was a pediatric endocrinology fellow at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and  Research center in Saudi Arabia and an ESPE Clinical fellow  at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in the UK.


Professional Milestones

As well as maintaining her numerous clinical activities, Dr. Al Amiri works ardently in scientific research and managed to publish her findings in highly influential medical journals. The focus of her research is on neonatal and adolescent diabetes. Along with conducting research, Al Amiri lectures in Pediatrics at the University of Sharjah. Importantly, Dr. Al Amiri is the founder of the Diabetes Unit  at Al Qassimi Hospital in 2001. This Unit serves both adults  and pediatric patients. Therefore, a notable achievement of Dr. Al Amiri’s is the initiation of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology services in al Qassimi Hospital.

One of the most prominent achievements of Dr. Al Amiri is starting the voluntary support group “Friends for Diabetes”, which supports patients and provides educational, medical and financial help for individuals who are in need of  treatment. The group also strives to raise public awareness  about diabetes through organizing campaigns against diabetes in the UAE.   

Dr. Al Amiri is a member in several prestigious medical societies around the world; she was elected as a member for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2006 and the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology in Manchester, England in 2010. Additionally, she is a member in Emirates Medical Association and the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes. Al Amiri won a place in the highly competitive “Tatweer Leadership Program”, which further sculpted her management skills. Dr. Al Amiri was one of the founders and committee member of Arab Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, which was founded in 2013.

Dr. Al Amiri participated in several national and international conferences; be it through presenting or chairing sessions and panel discussions. Examples of these international medical conferences include these of the Arab Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes/European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology in 2014, the Arab Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes in Kuwait, 2013 and the First American Diabetes Association –Middle East Congress in Dubai in 2012. She has also been invited to lecture at several meetings  of esteemed groups and societies, to mention but a few; the  Rashid Centre for Diabetes and Research Diabetes symposium 2014, Excellence on Diabetes and Endocrinology Conference and International Arab Children Health Congress.


Awards and Recognitions

Dr. Al Amiri received numerous prestigious awards for her outstanding achievements in her field. Notably she won Sheikh Rashid Award for scientific achievements twice in 2001 and 2002 and Al Qassimi Hospital Excellence Award in the 2001.

Dr. Al Amiri’s proactive approach and pioneering work has won her a great deal of admiration, especially in regards to establishing the “Friends for Diabetes” support group. The latter had indeed a significantly positive impact on the lives of diabetic children and their families. Therefore, Dr. Elham Al Amiri was  chosen to receive the Sheikh Hamdan Award for Distinct Medical  Personalities in UAE for the term 2013-2014.
