Commencement of the DIAD-DIAL Dual Meeting in Dubai 01 March 2018

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance, and President of the Dubai Health Authority, and organized by the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, Dr. Ahmad Al Hashemi, Member of the Board of Trustees ot the Award, opened the second Dual Meeting of the Dubai International Academy of Dermatopathology and the Dubai International Academy of Laser & Aesthetic Dermatology. The conference was held at the St. Regis Hotel in Dubai, and was attended by over 400 medical specialists from 25 countries around the world.

During his opening speech, Dr. Al Hashemi said: “Undoubtedly, the relevance of today’s conference is widespread across the Middle East, and the UAE in particular. Dermatopathology and cosmetic dermatological surgery are arguably the most important areas to be developed across the medical community, as dermatological conditions are known to cause great suffering on those afflicted with them. Therefore, it is paramount that combined efforts are invested in helping these patients and offering them the best treatment options possible. As you know, the United Arab Emirates has continually pioneered to raise awareness in the health community.”

He added that the contribution of the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences towards the conference has been a continuation of the legacy of giving it had started 19 years ago, and that he was proud that this organization – one that collaborates with others around the world – was built in the United Arab Emirates. He added he was hopeful for this legacy to continue for generations to come.

Dr. Faiza Al Ali, Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist at the Dubai Health Authority and Chairman of DIAD-DIAL, announced that the second Dual Meeting had arrived after the remarkable success of the first, and would enable Dubai to participate in the 2022 International Conference of Dermatopathology, which will be taking place for the first time in an Arab country.

She added that Dermatopathology is an invaluable specialization that requires extensive clinical knowledge and diagnostic skill, as skin conditions and cancers are not of the kind to be detected by the naked eye or laboratory analyses. The DIAD-DIAL conference will be launching its first scientific investigation in diagnosis and treatment of dermatological illnesses based on findings from research centers in the United States, and the conference will serve as an international platform in which treatments will be trialed for the first time.

Gathered at the conference were dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons from Sweden, Canada, the United States, Germany, Austria, and India, among many other countries. The conference was also supported by the International Society of Dermatopathology and the Italian Society of Dermatopathology, the Indian Association of Dermatology and the Saudi Association of Dermatology and Plastic Surgery. The first day of the conference was comprised of 15 lectures in the morning on skin tissue disorders, and 14 lectures in the afternoon on cosmetic laser procedures, as well as 9 clinical workshops led by esteemed physicians – these included a simulation of the Board exam, a discussion of cutting-edge laser sanding technologies, and non-surgical correction of nasal structure.

Professor Lorenzo Chironi discussed diagnostic techniques for atypical skin conditions. Professor Chironi is a widely recognized reference for dermatopathology in Europe – he is the author of various clinical texts and research papers, and was the previous President of the International Society of Dermatopathology.

On the sidelines of the conference, the First Women's Elite Forum, under the title “Cosmetic appearance or essence”, hosted a women's discussion on the scientific foundations of plastic medicine and how the spread of practices have turned the profession into a trade and abused the essence of this science.
