Under the auspices of Hamdan Medical Award: Dubai hosts a training course on the Justification of Diagnostic Imaging and Use of Referral Guidelines 10 September 2014

Under the auspices of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences and in cooperation with the World Health Organization and the International Society of Radiology (ISR), Dubai Health Authority organized a one-day training course on the Justification of Diagnostic Imaging and Use of Referral Guidelines.

The training course was held at Mohamed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center with the attendance of Dr. Mariam Mikhail from the World Health Organization and Dr. Jan Labuscagne the president of the ISR, and the participation of 52 radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicist.

During the opening ceremony, Dr. Ahmed AL Hashimi, a member of the Award’s Board of Trustees, delivered a speech in which he confirmed the award’s commitment towards the medical community in order to improve the healthcare services through upgrading the performance of the professionals in that sector.

“The course embodies the culture of the joint action between the prestigious Stakeholders both locally and internationally. It also represents a great opportunity for doctors and for all health workers to share their experiences and learn the latest findings of scientists in this field”, Dr. Al Hashimi added.

For its part, Dr. Jameela Al Suwaidi, medical physicist, chair of radiation committee at the DHA and director of the patient radiation safety project, announced that the main objective of the course is to protect patients, workers and the public from the exposure to unnecessary ionizing radiation through training the specialists on the principles of the justification of radiological procedures and the optimization of practice.

Today, ionizing radiation is one of the most important diagnostic tools and a key component of cancer treatment, but these benefits are challenged by the possible risks of ionizing radiation exposure.

“The issues and solutions to introduce and use referral guidelines in practice in UAE were discussed and mechanisms for building global, regional and local partnerships to improve justification were presented in the course”, she added.
