“Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences” supports 1st International GCC Hernia Surgery Congress 29 April 2010
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh “Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum” Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, Professor “Najib Al-Khaja” Secretary General of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences inaugurates today the “1st International GCC Hernia Surgery Congress” and “Mid-Term Congress of APHS” (Asia Pacific Hernia Society). 
 
Professor “Najib Al-Khaja” said that the two-day conference is being held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dubai Festival City. 22 international experts will present 83 lectures, with the participation of 400 doctors from Europe and Asia.

The conference is chaired by Professor “Volker Schupemlick” pioneer in Hernia surgery and one of the well-known Hernia surgeons worldwide. On the top of list of the speakers, Professor “Davide Lomanto” president of APHS, and Professor “Rolf Hartung” president of GCC Hernia Society are the main attraction in the conference.
 
Professor “Najib Al-Khaja” said that holding such conference comes as a part of fruitful cooperation between GCC Hernia Society and Asia-Pacific Hernia Society. The conference aims at evaluating surgical techniques used in treatment of various cases of Hernia in order to improve quality of surgical treatment, as well as exchanging experiences among specialists. 
 
He adds that Hernia surgical operation is one of the most common surgical operations worldwide, particularly as it is not linked to a certain age category. The reason can be congenital defect or acquired in later age group. 
 
He added that Hernia patients often prefer surgical intervention, especially as symptoms associated with Hernia are often disturbing to patients, as they accompanied by severe pain. 
 
Dr. “Najib Al-Khaja” General Secretary of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences added that as a prelude to the conference 4 workshops were held yesterday, during which participants followed-up to live transmission of four Hernia operations. Three of them were conducted in Dubai hospital and one in “Minimally Invasive Institute” of Berlin, Germany. 
 
The audience interaction with these benefit workshops was remarkable, through their direct access to the latest technology used in Hernia surgery worldwide.
