Al Khaja meets the members of the Scientific Committee of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences 17 May 2011
Prof. Najeeb Al Khaja, Secretary General of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences (SHAMS) met with the members of the Scientific Committee and sub-committees of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences in its 7th term 2011-2012. The meeting was held Last week, at Lulu Majlis in Al Ain Rotana Hotel.
 
 
 
During the meeting Prof. Al Khaja reviewed the action plans of the award’s scientific committees, in which neonatal medicine is determined as the topic of Grand Hamdan International Award, while fetal Medicine, nutrition in infants and inborn errors of metabolism are determined as the topic of Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence. 
 
During the meeting, 30th of November 2011 was announced as the deadline of receiving  nominations for the awards in its 3 categories the international awards, the Arab world awards and the UAE awards. 
 
The meeting was attended by Abdullah Bin Souqat Executive Director of the award and the heads and members of the Scientific Committee and subcommittees of the Award (specialized in the topics of the 7th term of the award from Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAE University, Tawam Hospital, Dubai Hospital and Al Qassimi Hospital). 
At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Najeeb Al Khaja, praised the generous support by the patron of the award H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and the President of Dubai Health Authority.
 
Also, Prof. Al Khaja thanked the heads and members of the award’s scientific committee and Subcommittees in its previous term 2009-2010 for their considerable efforts and commitment which has lead to the highest standards of transparency in selecting the winners. He also urged the members of the new scientific committees to move forward on the award’s long path of excellence since 1999 until now. 
 
Prof. Najeeb Al Khaja said that the total value of the awards is 2.8 million DHs. distributed on 8 awards. 
 
He said that honoring doctors, scientists, researchers, significant personalities and institutions is an essential element for achieving excellence by all members of the community generally and by health sectors’ workers particularly. 
 
“The award honors physicians and scientists who have contributed to the health sectors’ developments through invention of novel surgical equipments or techniques or discovery of a new mode of therapy or new drugs that lead to a decrease in related morbidity”, Prof. Al Khaja said.
 
In the 7th term of the award 2011-2012 neonatal Medicine is selected as the topic for Grand Hamdan International Award. This specialization is a relatively new because it has become a stand-alone medical specialty since 1975. 
 
The Scientific Committee of International Grand Hamdan Award is chaired by Prof. Sheriff Karam with the membership of Prof. Youssef Abdul Razzaq, Dr. Haseeb Narchi and Dr. Ayman Al-Rahmani. 
 
The second award in the international category is Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence, whose scientific committee is chaired by Prof. Haseeb Narchi. Three topics have been identified for this award i.e. fetal Medicine, nutrition in infants and inborn errors of metabolism. 
 
The members of the Scientific Committee of Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence, on fetal medicine are Dr. Hisham Mirghani and Dr. Garde Bkdaci. 
 
As for the members of Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence on genetic metabolic diseases are Dr. Fatima Al Jasmi, Dr. Joseph Hertecant and Dr. Fatima Bastaki. 
 
And, the members of the Scientific Committee of Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence on nutrition in infants are Dr. Youssef Abdul Razzaq, Dr. Fares Chedid and Dr. Alaa El Demerdash. 
 
The third award in the international category is Hamdan Award for Volunteers in humanitarian medical services. This award is given for four personalities or organizations that provide important voluntary services and who significantly contribute to alleviating the suffering of a large number of human beings subjected to exceptional circumstances such as catastrophes, epidemics, famine, wars and natural calamities.
 
Dr. Salim Bastaki chairs the Scientific Committee of the award, with the membership of Dr. Michelle McLean, Dr. Maria Cabezudo, Dr. Samir attoub and Dr.Gularaz Khan. 
 
Concerning the category of the Arab world awards, it is divided into two awards the first one is Hamdan Award for the best medical college, institute or center in the Arab world.
 
The scientific committee of the award is chaired by Dr Saad Ghazal Aswad with the membership of Dr. Abdou Adam, Dr. Fawaz Torab, Dr. Shamsa Al Awar, Dr. Juma Al Kaabi, Dr. Fatima Almaski and Dr. Lena Amiri. 
 
The second award in that category is Hamdan Award for honoring two distinguished personalities from the Arab world.
 
This award is not based on direct nominations but the winners are chosen through communication with health ministries, health authorities and medical institutions in the Arab world. 
 
The main objective of establishing the category of the UAE awards is to encourage research and innovation in the UAE to keep pace with developed countries’ progress in health sectors’. 
 
This category includes three awards. The first award is Hamdan Award for an outstanding clinical Department in the public sector in UAE, which is given equally to two clinical departments.
 
Its scientific Committee is chaired by Dr. Frank Branki, with the membership of Dr. Mouza Al Sharhan and Dr. Hatem Ahmed Abu El-Abbas Ghoneim. 
 
The second award is Hamdan Award for honoring individuals working in the field of medicine and health.
 
It is awarded for five personalities who are selected by communicating with the Ministry of Health and health authorities in each Emirate within UAE for their continuous and earnest efforts to develop the medical sector in UAE.
 
The third award in that category is Hamdan award for the best two research papers published in the award’s Journal of Medical Sciences from September 2010 until March 2012. 
 
The scientific committee of the Award is chaired by Dr. Omar Al Agnaf and with the membership of Dr. Christopher Howarth, Dr. Ossama Osman and Dr. Abdel-Kader Souid.
 
The nominations’ rules and regulations are published on the award’s web site www.hmaward.org.ae, accompanied by an invitation to all concerned faculties of medicine, medical associations, research institutes, doctors and voluntary organizations around the world to nominate themselves for the awards.
