Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance, Chairman of Dubai Health Authority and patron of Hamdan Medical Award (HMA), and under the umbrella of the 7th Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences, 9th Middle East Metabolic Group Meeting (MEMG) was kicked off in Dubai.

MEMG is organized by Orphan Europe foundation from 12th till 14th of December at JW Marriott Marquis, with the participation of around 200 specialists from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, England and the United States of America.

During the conference, Mr. Abdullah Bin Souqat, Executive Director, HMA, delivered a speech, in which he pointed out the Award keenness on unifying its efforts with the efforts of the local and international medical institutions, especially those exerted to organize several events on a certain medical specialty during a short period of time.

“The closing session of the 7th Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences dealt with the topic “Inborn Errors of Metabolism” with the participation of a number of leading lecturers including Professor Ronald Wanders, the winner of Hamdan International Award for Medical Research Excellence. Also, this session witnessed the launch of the 9th MEMG”, he said.

It is worth to mention that the idea of organizing MEMG had appeared during the conference held in Amsterdam in 2004 on Genetic metabolic disorders, with the aim of establishing an institution capable to represent the countries of the Middle East that have a high rate of consanguinity and thus a high ratio of genetic metabolic diseases.
